La Rochefoucauld and the Language of Unmasking

Quarrels would not last long if the fault was only on one side.
If we resist our passions, it is more due to their weakness than our strength.
We are strong enough to bear the misfortunes of others.
It is more shameful to distrust one's friends than to be deceived by them.
The intellect is always fooled by the heart.
One gives nothing so freely as advice.
One is never as unhappy as one thinks, nor as happy as one hopes.
