Of Tempus,Temporis......

drawing by marguerita

So time has passed?
You are getting older?
It just means that a certain number of homogenous moments (seconds, minutes, hours, and so on) have succeeded one another in a linear fashion: tick, tack, tick, tack…
Now look in the mirror!
At least since the introduction of the pocket watch in the 16th century brought exact time measurement into everyday life, modern agents have found themselves increasingly encased in a calculable and measurable temporal environment.
We measure and organize time as never before, and we worry about not “losing” or “wasting” time, as though time was a finite substance or a container into which we should try to stuff as many good experiences as possible.

Sebastiano Mondadori and the Dragonfly

drawing by marguerita

By Sebastiano Mondadori · Wednesday, June 8, 2011

The eyes of the dragonfly are one of the most amazing and awe inspiring sights. Given almost 80% of the insect’s brain power is dedicated to its sight and the fact that it can see in all 360 degrees around it, it symbolizes the uninhibited vision of the mind and the ability to see beyond the limitations of the human self. It also in a manner of speaking symbolizes a man/woman’s rising from materialism to be able to see beyond the mundane into the vastness that is really our Universe, and our own minds.

Color me Blue

watercolor by marguerita

Of Feelings,Soul,Lacrimae running like a River in my Heart

drawing collage by marguerita

When we cry, we may be doing more than expressing emotion. Our tears, according to striking new research, may be sending chemical signals that influence the behavior of other people.

No woman no cry

No woman no cry

No woman no cry

No woman no cry

Cause I remember
when we used to sit

In a government yard in trenchtown

Observing the hypocrites
Mingle with the good people we meet

Good friends we have, oh,
good friends we have lost

Along the way

In this great future,

You can't forget your past

So dry your tears, I say

[chorus]

No woman no cry
 No woman no cry
Little darling, don't shed no tears
 No woman no cry

Said I remember when we use to sit
In the government yard in trenchtown
And then georgie would make the fire lights
I seh, log would burnin' through the nights
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge
Of which I'll share with you
My feet is my only carriage
And so I've got to push on thru ,
Oh, while I'm gone
 Everything 's gonna be alright
 Everything 's gonna be alright

 [chorus]
 No woman no cry
 No woman no cry
I seh little darlin'
 Don't shed no tears
No woman no cry. Bob Marley

Sweets,Mementos, and Rose: Markaroons, by Marguerita and Mark ,Please !!!!!

drawing collage by marguerita

On November 8th of 2010,I attended a fundraiser for the Israeli Herzog Hospital ,where Krug champagne sponsored and my husband Mark Fahrer catered. There was a selection of wonderful champagnes, the Rose in particular my favorite.
I also learned from the amusing and charming Carl Heline, Krug's ambassador, that the wine glass is much better to taste the champagne, than in the famous flute! Ah,Ha!!!
Mark served a macaroon, which I went crazy for.
So, later on in the night,I had a fun thought .Twist his name Mark with macaroons and voila! I coined the name: MARKAROONS!!!!!! and sat at my work table to create an image for a label.
Then I whispered in Mark's ear ,that he should venture into producing a line of baked goods.

For some reason ,forever I love sweets, most probably inspired by my mother Mea,who always made Linzer tortes,Lemon Merengue Pies,RumBaba....
In 1975, after my successful title opening drawings for the Brazilian soap opera O REBU, the slang word in Portuguese for party,I made sure to take my mother back to Paris, her first time in Europe, after the war. We both went looking for the
hotel Le Colisée on the Rue de Colisee, where my mother lived for a while, while working for Unesco, helping displaced Polish Jews to relocate to Australia, while she studied to be a cosmetician at Institute Antoine. She met Helena Rubinstein a the time and then my father, who had a Carte De Sejour.
He was writing for Teintex,a French trade publication. One day, both took a boat to Australia and I was conceived in Tasmania.

In Paris,my mother and I went over to Lenotre, the famous pastry chef, where I got his book,to add to my mother's collection of cuisine literature, her huge Larousse Gastronomique, which I lost in one of my transatlantic moves, and miss a lot. The Larousse was for me a symbol of my two parents. Both, who suffered so much, lost so much, were able after Auschwitz and Siberia, have a wonderful curiosity for Life, taught me never to have Anger, but search for Beauty and Colors and stand up against Injustice. Oh,my beautiful parents. You both live in my heart, and keep me going. When I am sad and down, your spirits bring me back up. I remember immediately,my mother baking and my father typing his articles ,published in Brazil and international publications, about innovations in Textiles, Chemicals and Life.
So,above the recipe for Markaroons, voila, drawings and name by Marguerita and introduced by Mark Fahrer, who holds me hostage to my sweet dreams.......

Of Love,Love is a Many Splendored Thing? Thing?????

drawing /collage by marguerita

"Nobody wants to lose you if they love you."

An intimate relationship is a particularly close interpersonal relationship, and the term is sometimes used euphemistically for a sexual relationship.

The characteristics of an intimate relationship include an enduring behavioral interdependence, repeated interactions, emotional attachment and need fulfillment. Intimate relationships include friendships, dating relationships, and marital relationships and there are individual differences in both the quality and quantity of these relationships. Several stages in intimate relationships have been identified: the beginning or development stages (e.g., attraction and dating), relational maintenance and repair (e.g., forgiveness), relational stressors (e.g., conflict and betrayal), and relational termination (e.g., models of dissolution).

Intimate relationships play a central role in the overall human experience.[1] Humans have a universal need to belong and to love which is satisfied within an intimate relationship.[2] Intimate relationships consist of the people that we are attracted to, whom we like and love, romantic and sexual relationships, and those whom we marry and provide and receive emotional and personal support from.[1] Intimate relationships provide people with a social network of people that provide strong emotional attachments[1] and fulfill our universal need of belonging and the need to be cared for.

The systematic study of intimate relationships is a relatively new area of research within the field of social psychology that has emerged within the last few decades.[1] Although the systematic study of intimate relationships is fairly recent, social thought and analysis of intimate relationships dates back to early Greek philosophers.[1] Early scholarly studies were also interested in intimate relationships but were limited to dyads or small groups of people in the public and narrowly examined behaviours such as competing and cooperation, negotiation and bargaining, and compliance and resistance.[1]

Physical intimacy is characterized by romantic or passionate love and attachment, or sexual activity. from Wikipedia

lyrics by Jerry Vale

Love is a many splendored thing

It's the April rose that only grows in the early spring

Love is nature's way of giving a reason to be living

The golden crown that makes a man a king

Once on a high and windy hill

In the morning mist two lovers kissed

and the world stood still

Then your fingers touched my silent heart

and taught it how to

sing

Yes, true love's a many splendored thing

Once on a high and windy hill

In the morning mist two lovers kissed and the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to
sing

Yes, true love's a many splendored thing

Of theMind,Nocturnos,Federico Garcia Lorca

drawings by marguerita

It is only fitting that the story of the brain should be a visual one, for the visuals had the ancients fooled for millenniums.
The brain was so ugly that they assumed the mind must lie elsewhere.

Un brazo de la noche
entra por mi ventana.

Un gran brazo moreno
con pulseras de agua.

Sobre un cristal azul
jugaba al río mi alma.

Los instantes heridos
por el reloj... pasaban.

3

Asomo la cabeza
por mi ventana, y veo
cómo quiere cortarla
la cuchilla del viento.

En esta guillotina
invisible, yo he puesto
las cabezas sin ojos
de todos mis deseos.

Y un olor de limón
llenó el instante inmenso,
mientras se convertía
en flor de gasa el viento.

Of Chaos,Universe,Garlic, You and Me:Happy Allof Us NewYear

drawing by marguerita

The universe is a chaotic place. It is full of uncertainty and it can be difficult to predict exactly what is going to happen at any given time be it the present or the far future. Scientists and mathematicians have developed a theory to explain this phenomenon. It is called chaos theory and it is highly relevant to the field of teaching.
Education is an uncertain endeavor. Not only is it difficult to exactly predict what will happen in the class each day, it is nearly impossible to ascertain what the best course of education for any given person or class may be. The reasons for this are simple. Education is connected to the rest universe and as such is fully subject to the chaos that naturally exists in reality.
Chaos has been contemplated by mankind for several millennia. The concept can be seen in early religious philosophy (Hinduism has believed in chaos from its inception) to the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh. Isaac Newton also considered the nature of chaos in the universe. A modern view of chaos theory was written by Gollub and Solomon. They wrote (282),
"A chaotic system is defined as one that shows sensitivity to initial conditions.
That is, any uncertainty in the initial state of the given system, no matter how small, will lead to rapidly growing errors in any effort to predict the future behavior. In other words, the system is chaotic.

The Adventures of The Markie De Sade : He says he cannot figure me out,ha!

drawing/collage by marguerita
Markie de Sade copyrights by marguerita bornstein 2010

Marquis de Sade Quotes
The imagination is the spur of delights... all depends upon it, it is the mainspring of everything; now, is it not by means of the imagination one knows joy? Is it not of the imagination that the sharpest pleasures arise?
Marquis de Sade

All universal moral principles are idle fancies.
Marquis de Sade

All, all is theft, all is unceasing and rigorous competition in nature; the desire to make off with the substance of others is the foremost - the most legitimate - passion nature has bred into us and, without doubt, the most agreeable one.
Marquis de Sade

Are not laws dangerous which inhibit the passions? Compare the centuries of anarchy with those of the strongest legalism in any country you like and you will see that it is only when the laws are silent that the greatest actions appear.
Marquis de Sade

Are wars anything but the means whereby a nation is nourished, whereby it is strengthened, whereby it is buttressed?
Marquis de Sade

Between understanding and faith immediate connections must subsist.
Marquis de Sade

Destruction, hence, like creation, is one of Nature's mandates.
Marquis de Sade

Happiness is ideal, it is the work of the imagination.
Marquis de Sade

Happiness lies neither in vice nor in virtue; but in the manner we appreciate the one and the other, and the choice we make pursuant to our individual organization.
Marquis de Sade

I've already told you: the only way to a woman's heart is along the path of torment. I know none other as sure.
Marquis de Sade

In order to know virtue, we must first acquaint ourselves with vice.
Marquis de Sade

It is always by way of pain one arrives at pleasure.
Marquis de Sade

It is not my mode of thought that has caused my misfortunes, but the mode of thought of others.
Marquis de Sade

Lust is to the other passions what the nervous fluid is to life; it supports them all, lends strength to them all ambition, cruelty, avarice, revenge, are all founded on lust.
Marquis de Sade

Lust's passion will be served; it demands, it militates, it tyrannizes.
Marquis de Sade

Man's natural character is to imitate; that of the sensitive man is to resemble as closely as possible the person whom he loves. It is only by imitating the vices of others that I have earned my misfortunes.
Marquis de Sade

My manner of thinking, so you say, cannot be approved. Do you suppose I care? A poor fool indeed is he who adopts a manner of thinking for others!
Marquis de Sade

Nature has not got two voices, you know, one of them condemning all day what the other commands.
Marquis de Sade

Nature, who for the perfect maintenance of the laws of her general equilibrium, has sometimes need of vices and sometimes of virtues, inspires now this impulse, now that one, in accordance with what she requires.
Marquis de Sade

Never lose sight of the fact that all human felicity lies in man's imagination, and that he cannot think to attain it unless he heeds all his caprices. The most fortunate of persons is he who has the most means to satisfy his vagaries.
Marquis de Sade

No lover, if he be of good faith, and sincere, will deny he would prefer to see his mistress dead than unfaithful.
Marquis de Sade

Stuff for Thought:Staphylococcus aureus in Our Bodies

drawing by marguerita

Why do one-third of the population have the staph bacteria in their noses
and not get sick while, for others, a staph infection can be lethal?

Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning is often caused when a food handler contaminates food products that are served or stored at room- or refrigerator temperature. Common examples of such foods are desserts (especially custards and cream-filled or topped desserts), salads (especially those containing mayonnaise, such as tuna salad, potato salad, and macaroni salad), poultry and other egg products, and casseroles.

Staphylococcus aureus is a natural resident of the human body.
It can be found on the skin and in mucous membranes like the nose. It inhabits the body without causing harm most of the time.Staphylococcus aureus is a facultative anaerobe; it can perform both anaerobic and aerobic respiration. Staphylococcus aureus can be pathogenic--causing disease.
MRSA (or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a pathogenic strain that is most commonly picked up in hospitals.
Staphylococcus aureus can cause disease or infection if normal conditions change--for example, if the immune system is already suppressed due to a cold or other minor infection. Staphylococcus aureus can cause boils, food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome and pneumonia. The bacteria produce a toxin in the food, which causes most of the symptoms. Risk factors include:

Eating food that was prepared by a person with a skin infection(these infections commonly contain Staphylococcus aureus bacteria)

  • Eating food kept at room temperature
  • Eating improperly prepared food
  • Eating the same food as someone who has symptoms

The disease is common in the U.S.

Obama,US,U&Me,Healthcare status quo:Years of Wrangling Lies ......the

When the health care law makes it to the Supreme Court, the justices will ask, with varying degrees of concern, this age-old question: How do we define the limits, because limits there must be, on this federal power? - Jason Mazzone

drawings by marguerita
The central question before the courts has not been whether
the health care market substantially affects interstate commerce,
a point largely accepted by all sides.
Rather, the issue has been a semantic one:
determining whether the act of not obtaining insurance is best defined as activity or,
as Virginia's solicitor general,
E. Duncan Getchell Jr., has argued in the Richmond case, "inactivity" that is beyond Congress's reach.

P.S Hippocrates was a Greek physician born in 460 BC on the island of Cos, Greece. He became known as the founder of medicine and was regarded as the greatest physician of his time. He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He held the belief that illness had a physical and a rational explanation. He rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by possession of evil spirits and disfavor of the gods.

Hippocrates held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts.

He accurately described disease symptoms and was the first physician to accurately describe the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as epilepsy in children. He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness. He noted that there were individual differences in the severity of disease symptoms and that some individuals were better able to cope with their disease and illness than others. He was also the first physician that held the belief that thoughts, ideas, and feelings come from the brain and not the heart as others of him time believed.

Hippocrates traveled throughout Greece practicing his medicine. He founded a medical school on the island of Cos, Greece and began teaching his ideas. He soon developed an Oath of Medical Ethics for physicians to follow. This Oath is taken by physicians today as they begin their medical practice. He died in 377 BC. Today Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine".

Sisifsobama: Quo Vadis ?

drawing by marguerita

Or as Coburn put it last Thursday on the Senate floor, criticizing his colleagues for celebrating the tax cut deal, last week's bargain could easily become another example of how "both parties have laid a trap for future generations by our inaction, our laziness, our arrogance, and a crass desire for power." That's extreme language. And we need more of it.

THE HORMONES :Life while cooking a chicken stock

drawing by marguerita from THE HORMONES

Act I

The play begins with an acting company preparing to rehearse a play, incidentally one of Pirandello's own, Mixing It Up. As the rehearsal is about to begin the play is unexpectedly interrupted by the arrival of six strange people. The Director of the play, furious at the interruption, demands an explanation.

The Father reveals themselves as unfinished characters in search of an author to finish their story. The Director initially believes them to be mad, but as they begin to argue amongst themselves and reveal details of their story he begins to listen. While he isn't an author, the Director agrees to stage their story despite the disbelief amongst the jeering actors.

City to Deploy Ambulances to Save Organs

By ANEMONA HARTOCOLLIS

Published: December 01, 2010

Some 911 calls in Manhattan will now bring out two ambulances, one hurrying to the scene and one lagging slightly behind.

The first one will try to save the patient's life. The second one will try to save the patient's kidneys, in case the first ambulance fails.

After months of grappling with the ethical and legal implications, New York City medical officials are beginning to test a system that they hope will one day greatly increase the number of organs collected for transplant.

For five months starting Wednesday, the city will deploy a specially trained team that will monitor 911 calls for people who may be in danger of dying, like those having a heart attack. If efforts to resuscitate the patient fail, the team will quickly move in and try to save the kidneys; normally, patients who die outside hospitals cannot be donors because if too much time passes after the heart stops beating, the organs are unusable.

City officials said the project would be the first of its kind in the United States, though similar operations have been carried out in Europe. They said that they believed they had solved any ethical problems by adopting what they called very conservative standards for who would qualify as a donor.

To overcome fears that patients would be allowed to die for the sake of their organs, officials said that doctors and paramedics trying to resuscitate a patient would not be told whether the preservation unit was waiting in the wings until a supervisor had given the order to stop rescue efforts. The organ team, which will travel in a bright red and white ambulance marked "Organ Preservation Unit," is supposed to remain out of sight.

The dead person would have to have registered as a donor through a card, driver's license or online registry, and the family would also have to give consent.

Of Seizures, Brain,Kidneys,Thyroid and the Thunderstorm in the Mind

watercolor by marguerita from SCHERZO series

The best way to think about a seizure is to imagine an electrical storm. Our brains and bodies are normally full of electricity.
The brain generates biochemical electrical charges, allowing brain cells, nerves and muscles to communicate.
A seizure happens when this electricity surges out of control and overloads parts of the brain’s circuitry.

Hypothyroidism is more common in women than in men, probably because hormonal imbalance acts as a trigger for thyroid problems.

Women’s bodies have a delicate balance of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which can be upset when your body is under stress and not receiving enough support.

There are several findings that evidence a great interest for thyroid disorders just in the Medieval Medical School of Salerno (12th century). Rogerius Salernitanus, the Salernitan surgeon and author of "Post mundi fabricam" (around 1180) was considered at that time the surgical text par excellence all over Europe. In the chapter "De bocio" of his magnum opus, he describes several pharmacological and surgical cures, some of which nowadays are reappraised quite scientifically effective.[31]

In modern times, the thyroid was first identified by the anatomist Thomas Wharton (whose name is also eponymised in Wharton's duct of the submandibular gland) in 1656.[32]

Thyroxin was identified only in the 19th century.

Of Kidneys,Adjacências,Mercury Healing and Light

drawing by marguerita
One of the most neglected conditions in many hospitals, medical facilities involved in health care, despite all the talking ,is in fact the aspect of lighting, the environment and food, regarding healing.
I already have experienced that fact in the past and observed that aspect.
Since I am now forced to spend three hours ,three times a week ,tethered to a dialyser, a machine that runs my blood in and out to remove toxic wastes, I kept wondering why in hell ,as soon as I arrive,I feel so exhausted and during and after. exacerbating my already existing symptoms.
I try to read or divert my mind, maybe listen to music or forget the ordeal So I started to understand my surroundings.
I look at the ceilings and realize that the space in reality is adequate for storage of inanimate objects and now I am in reality being injected with mercury, through the artificial lighting, the fluorescent industrial lighting all over me.
"
All fluorescent lamps contain a small amount of elemental mercury (Hg), also known as quicksilver. When lamps are cold, some of the mercury in the lamp is in liquid form, but while the lamp is operating, or when the lamp is hot, most of the mercury is in a gaseous or vapor form.

Mercury vapor is a highly toxic substance, with an "extreme" rating as a poison. Even in liquid form, contact with mercury is considered life-threatening or a "severe" risk to health. Mercury can cause severe respiratory tract damage, brain damage, kidney damage, central nervous system damage, and many other serious medical conditions even for extremely small doses."http://nemesis.lonestar.org/reference/electricity/fluorescent/safety.html

I then invest myself in understanding the phenomena of lighting, which is from ancient and primitive times a concern of humans.
"The philosophy that guides this concept is rooted in research in the neurosciences, environmental psychology, psychoneuroimmunology, and evolutionary biology. The common thread linking these bodies of research is the physiological effects of stress on the individual and the ability to heal. Psychologically supportive environments enable patients and families to cope with and transcend illness. There is considerable confusion about what constitutes a healing environment. Some refer to what we have come to know as "hospitality healthcare design" of the 1980s as healing environments. While some hotels have a high level of design and drama which may be aesthetically appealing, they generally lack those qualities that one would consider to be restorative or conducive to physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. The goal of all healing environments is to engage patients in the conscious process of self-healing and spiritual growth. Spaces should be designed to be nurturing and therapeutic and, most important, to reduce stress, aimed at eliminating environmental stressors and putting patients in contact with nature in the treatment setting. The Importance of Lighting Eighty percent of what we interpret of our surroundings comes to us from what we see of our environment and that is greatly affected by the light available in that environment. Lighting design in healthcare environments is a major factor in creating healing situations. Since the design of healthcare environments is said to influence patient’s outcomes, yet high costs prevent most hospitals from renovating or rebuilding, changes in lighting becomes a cost effective way to improve existing environments. It is proven that people who are surrounded by natural light are more productive and live healthier lives." Humans are an electromagnetic, energy phenomena with swirls, currents, pulsations and vibrations that move through and extend out from the body creating a field of energy. This field vitally serves us in a number of ways. Like skin, it protects us from other energetic phenomena such as sun flares, strong electromagnetic fields of energy created around power lines, fluorescent lighting, nuclear radiation and a multitude of other unbalanced energies. It assimilates and organizes sensory information before it enters the body, helping us from becoming overwhelmed or disoriented. It communicates to others our intentions and what we want to create in the world. It connects us to others. We are biologically wired to be social and our energy field helps us feel part of the human race. It’s part of our grounding mechanisms, connecting us to Earth’s magnetic grids, providing the energetic stance for a focused, quiet mind. It creates a container for our body systems that creates vital well being and communication among all parts. It balances and synchronizes our internal systems with external systems that include changes in weather, seasons, moon cycles as well as social interactions with those around us. As our planet continues to lose its ozone layer, is affected by radiation from nuclear and toxic waste sites, increases its electrical usage and experiences other ecosystem breakdowns, our energy fields are more and more challenged to stay strong, healthy and vibrant. Proof of a Human Energy Field How do we know a human energy field exists? The human energy field has been known for millennium in both Eastern and Western systems, primarily from the higher senses of feeling or seeing. Yoga, a scientific system developed in India thousands of years ago and still vital and relevant today, introduced the concept of chakras, energetic centers found in seven major locations in the body that contribute to an energy field around us. Chi Kung, Tai Chi and other martial arts from China and Japan actively work with the energy emanating from the body, directing it in powerful ways for healing or fighting. In Western religious art, the human energy field has been acknowledged with golden halos painted above saints’ heads. Intuitives, psychics and other higher sense perceivers have long talked about seeing an aura of multiple colors emanating from around the body. Most recently, Western science has begun to discover and measure the energies created by the body. Over a 20 year period, Valerie Hunt, a neurophysiologist, scientifically investigated energy fields. Her findings were published in her book titled Infinite Mind: Science of the Human Vibrations of Consciousness. Quantum physicists in their investigations have also discovered human energy fields. In true scientific fashion, however, what healers simply call the energy field or aura, a quantum physicist refers to as a “hyperfield containing hyperspatial properties of torsion fields.” Other noted books for a scientific explanation of the human energy field are: Science and Human Transformation; Subtle Energies, Intentionality and Consciousness by William Tiller and Energy Medicine by James Oshman. Chakra is a concept referring to wheel-like vortices which, according to traditional Indian medicine, are believed to exist in the surface of the etheric double of man.[2] The Chakras are said to be "force centers" or whorls of energy permeating, from a point on the physical body, the layers of the subtle bodies in an ever-increasing fan-shaped formation. Rotating vortices of subtle matter, they are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energies.[3] Different systems posit a varying number of chakras; the most well known system in the West is that of 7 chakras

Phôs +phoros,Kidneys and Fiat Lux

drawing by marguerita
So, apropos what I have within me, maybe in more quantities, than by the rule,ha!I began to research the origins or the roots,as we humans seem to be curious creatures. Our bodies, made of chemical, water, mass of carne or carnal and spirituality encased(s0metimes).

To watch the moments, the blue skies, feel the air,the vibrations, answer to our perpetual questioning regarding fear and hope.Sense the passage of moments, the sudden stops and returns. The mind and the body.

So here where go:

Phosphorus got its name because it glows in the dark.

"Phosphorus" is from the Greek words phôs (light) and phoros (bearer), meaning "bringer of light," and the ancient name for the planet Venus when it appears before sunrise. Its symbol is P, from phosphorus.Phosphorus was first isolated in 1669 by German physician Hennig Brand (ca. 1630-1692). Brand was convinced that the key to changing metals into gold could be found in urine. While heating and purifying urine, Brand discovered phosphorus! It was the first time anyone had discovered an element unknown to ancient peoples.

Before Brand's discovery, phosphorus and its various compounds have been mentioned in old manuscripts as phosphorescents, or materials that glow in the dark.

Phosphorus is a nonmetal. An essential constituent of protoplasm, it is used in safety matches, pyrotechnics, incendiary shells, and fertilizers and to protect metal surfaces from corrosion.

As a gas it is colorless, but as a solid it can be a silvery white or a red depending on the how is bonded with itself. It is a vital part of living thing, like in human nervous tissue.

It burns when exposed to air.

The Renalpenal Diet: Relax and Enjoy........

drawing by marguerita
As much as I try to come to a logical understanding, for someone who always loved and still loves food, I am in a real tough spot.
Now more than ever i crave for all the ingredients, spices, fruits, vegetables, and different ways of cooking food, I am forced to calculate,to forget about and just imagine how green is my valley.
So I read and study every possible way of finding how to negotiate this deal with Life and Death.
Below, a text about phosphorus. Ain't that great: I even glow in the Dark. Ha!!!!!!

To get a better understanding of phosphate binders, let's talk about what roles phosphorus and calcium play in your body. Phosphorus and calcium are two minerals that are vital for keeping your body in good health. In particular, they help to maintain strong, healthy bones and teeth. They are also important for the cells in your body to store and use energy efficiently. These minerals play important roles in nerve function as well.

Normally, your body maintains a delicate balance between the levels of phosphorus and calcium. The amount of calcium and phosphorus (in the form of phosphate) in your blood is tightly regulated in various ways. One of these ways is by controlling the amount of phosphate that is absorbed from your food and excreted by your kidneys. Another important way to control phosphate and calcium levels is through a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH).

When your kidneys fail, they are no longer able to get rid of excess phosphate from your body. Kidney failure also results in excess PTH production, which further disrupts the balance between calcium and phosphate in your blood. As a result, excess phosphate starts to build up in your blood.

If you don't control your phosphate levels, you may be at risk for developing complications like heart disease, bone damage and other diseases. High phosphate levels can also contribute to vitamin D deficiency. This may require treatment with vitamin D supplements, which can make your body absorb more calcium from your food or medications.

Luckily, as a dialysis patient, you have three ways to help control phosphorus levels in your blood through diet, dialysis and phosphate binders:

Diet: Cutting back on phosphorus-rich food such as dairy products, nuts and beans help lower your phosphorus blood levels. However, it's important to have a balanced, nutritious diet, so it's difficult to control your phosphate levels by relying only on your renal diet.

Dialysis: Following your regular dialysis treatments will help remove some of the excess phosphorus from your body. But dialysis and diet alone may not be enough to control phosphorus levels.

Phosphate binders: Phosphate binders help to pass excess phosphate out of your body in your stool, reducing the amount of phosphate that gets into your blood. These medicines "bind" the phosphate in your digestive tract by combining with it to form a compound that isn't absorbed into your blood. You normally take phosphate binders with every meal to help protect you from absorbing too much phosphate from your food and drink. When you take phosphate binders as prescribed, and follow your renal diet, you can take back control of your phosphate levels. You must also make sure to get your full dialysis treatment.

It is very important to control phosphate levels when you have kidney disease. Doing so can help reduce the risk of a variety of complications. It's also important to control your calcium levels, especially when your phosphate levels are high. Most of your calcium intake is from food (dairy products), calcium containing phosphate binders and dialysis solutions. Your doctor can help you balance your calcium by adjusting your prescriptions for calcium-containing phosphate binders, calcium and vitamin D supplements or by prescribing a calcium-free phosphate binder.

When you take in too much calcium, you can develop an excess calcium load. Because your body tightly controls blood calcium levels, the excess calcium may "spill over" into other tissues, even though calcium levels in your blood remain normal. When excess calcium and excess phosphate are present, they can combine to form bony deposits in your tissues and organs. This process is called metastatic calcification. These bony deposits can cause severe pain, itchy skin, red eyes and other symptoms. These deposits can occur in your lungs, causing pain and difficulty in breathing. When these bony deposits occur in your heart and blood vessels, this is called cardiac calcification. The consequences of cardiac calcification are severe heart damage and even death may follow.

There are three common types of phosphate binders:

1. Aluminum-based phosphate binders were the first type of phosphate binders to be used. They are very effective at controlling phosphorus. The most common binder of this type is aluminum hydroxide. However, aluminum has toxic effects that cause bone disease and damage the nervous system. For this reason, aluminum-based phosphate binders are not often used much anymore.

2. Calcium-based phosphate binders are effective but don't bind phosphorus as well as aluminum. Common types of calcium-based binders include calcium acetate and calcium carbonate. These binders can also serve as calcium supplements if your calcium is low. However, if you are taking vitamin D supplements, you may already have high calcium levels, and these types of phosphate binders may provide more calcium than you should safely have (i.e., excess calcium load). This can increase the risk of metastatic calcification and the complications described below.

3. Aluminum-free, calcium-free phosphate binders are newer binders that are effective at controlling phosphorus. Because they do not contain aluminum or calcium, they do not cause problems with excess aluminum or calcium load.

You can now see why it's important to control your phosphorus and calcium levels. With the help of your healthcare team, find out your target calcium and phosphorus levels. By following your renal diet, dialyzing regularly, and taking your prescribed phosphate binders, you can control your phosphorus and calcium levels. This will help you feel better, stay healthier and avoid some of the complications of kidney disease.
